Coleman Library Basic Policy Information

Our Policies:

  • At the beginning of each semester, students are required to show both proof of registration (current course schedule/receipt) and E-Card in order to update all library records.
  • Students must show their E-Card when checking out materials or copying folders.
  • Coleman library staff does not make change. The copy machines accept coins and one-dollar bills.
  • Food and drinks are not allowed in the library.
  • The library is a quiet place for study and research. Noisy patrons will be asked to leave.
  • Cell phones and pagers should be switched to the "vibrate" position, if possible.
  • Children are not permitted to be left alone in the library for ANY reason or amount of time. Any unsupervised child will be removed from the library and taken immediately to the HCCS Security desk, where the parents will be notified. If the parent cannot be located, HCCS Security will call Child Protective Services.
  • Books may be checked out for two weeks and can be renewed twice.
  • With an active E-Card, books may be renewed on the Internet at the library’s home page http://library.hccs.edu/.
  • Students may check out up to five (5) books at one time, but no more than two (2) on one subject. Certain exceptions do apply regarding specific books. Ask Circulation for details.
  • Students may check out videocassettes and plastic models for presentation purposes only and must be returned immediately after the class ends for the day.
  • Magazines, journals and reference materials may not be checked out.
  • Only faculty can check out audio-visual equipment.
  • Reserve items (held behind the desk) may be checked out but must remain in the library. This includes reserved books and reviewing instructor's notes.
  • The library holds instructor’s notes as a courtesy. It is the responsibility of the students to insure all pages of the folder remain intact. Any damaged or missing pages should be reported immediately to the instructor.
  • The library is not responsible for money lost in the copy machines. An outside company maintains the copy machines and they should be contacted for refunds. The number to Coin Copiers is (713) 272-6171.
  • Personal computer disks may not be used in library computers. The disk drives have been disabled. The computer laboratory at the Coleman Campus is located in room 157.
  • The library staff does not offer assistance or technical support for the use of Web CT, Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point or Access.
  • Coleman Library’s telephone is for HCCS faculty and staff use only. Pay telephones are located in the lobby for student use.
  • HCCS has an arrangement with the Houston Academy of Medicine-Texas Medical Center Library (HAM-TMC), also known as the “Jones Library,” located at 1133 John Freeman Boulevard, to accommodate strictly Coleman Campus students.
  • Students must have an active E-Card and current course schedule to obtain a HAM-TMC library card from their Circulation Desk.
  • To gain remote access to the HAM-TMC Library’s databases, HCCS Coleman Campus students must have a HAM-TMC Library card and request permission from their website at http://www.library.tmc.edu/. For instructions to use the databases from home, or any more information, visit their website at or call their circulation desk at 713-799-7147.

Policy on Study Rooms:

  1. Rooms may be booked for two (2) hours at a time by HCCS students.
  2. Rooms are available on a first come, first served basis.
  3. Reservations must be made on the same day only.
  4. Reserved rooms will be held for no more than five (5) minutes past the beginning of the reservation time, according to the library’s clock. After five (5) minutes past the start of the reservation, the room immediately becomes available and may be reserved by another student or students.
  5. If a student reserves a room for two (2) hours and completely vacates the room before the end of their allotted time, the room becomes immediately available for use by another student.
  6. Food and drinks are not allowed in the library. Study rooms are no exception.
  7. If an individual reserves a room, but expects other students to join him/her, the room is still reserved for those initial two (2) hours. All additional students must sign-in at the circulation desk. Once those two hours have expired, the room becomes available for another student’s use.
  8. A student may use the room beyond the initial two (2) hours if no one has requested the room or there are other empty rooms available. Groups hoping to extend a two (2) hour reservation must wait until the two (2) hours have expired before being allowed to reserve the room for an additional two (2) hours.
  9. GROUPS ARE VIEWED AS A RESERVING INDIVIDUAL. EACH PARTY WITHIN A GROUP MUST SIGN IN AT THE CIRCULATION DESK. Each individual in the group is considered to have used a solid, two (2) hour reservation for that room. ANY MEMBER OF THAT GROUP MAY NOT RESERVE THE ROOM FOR AN ADDITIONAL TWO (2) HOURS. No student from a group may make more than one reservation per day.
  10. If a group has a reservation, completes their two (2) hour allotment and requests to make an additional reservation for later in the day, the reservation may only be made when the entire party is physically present to make that reservation and there are empty rooms available. No member of the group may make a reservation more than once per day.
  11. In the event that all the study rooms are filled, the library’s electronic classroom may be used as an alternative study room. Individual students may use the electronic classroom if all other rooms are occupied, but may have to share it with other individual students. Administration, faculty and library reservations for the electronic classroom will have priority; which may result in students being asked to vacate the room.
  12. In the event of all study rooms are occupied and the electronic classroom is unavailable, students will be referred to the Campus Coordinator’s office, room 242, for further assistance.
