Mission & Goals Adopted by the Libraries
Mission
In support of the HCC Mission to promote success and retention, the library system, an integral and vital part of the educational process, endeavors to provide the best possible human, material, and digital resources and services to support, enhance and supplement student learning.
The Libraries accomplish this wherever programs or courses are located and however they are delivered, by making available a variety of information and related learning services to the HCC community of students, faculty and staff, and, when appropriate, to the public.
- To provide and maintain physical facilities which are adequate to house the collections and provide space for users to be able to fully use the services and materials within the library.
- To provide access to an electronic catalog of materials, organized according to nationally recognized and accepted standards, which includes access to other indexesand full-text materials and provides a 'gateway' to a wide variety of external resources.
- To provide a well-organized collection of books, periodicals, audiovisual
and electronic media whcih meets the instructional needs of students
and faculty in order to support the courses, programs and degrees offered.
- To provide for the efficient acquisition of print and non-print materials and library equipment, supplies, and furniture.
- To provide a variety of methods for faculty and students to have input into the formulation of library and collection development policy and procedure.
- To review, revise and update the collection development policy and allocation formula regularly to insure that they accurately reflect the mission and goals of the college.
- To maintain a current and useful library collection reflecting the needs of all courses, degrees and programs.
- To provide materials that enable a broad exposure to various disciplines, cultures, and ways of understanding.
- To ensure access to the library's collection by all students and faculty regardless of location and method of program delivery.
- To provide for the efficient circulation of appropriate library materials to all students and faculty regardless of location.
- To maintain a media booking and delivery system for faculty use of media in and out of the classroom and for student use at any library location.
- To provide access to a broader range of materials through the development of borrowing agreements with other local institutions.
- To provide reference and information services using a variety of
current resource materials.
- To provide walk-in and call-in reference and related services at each HCCS library to all students and faculty.
- To provide and use current, up-to-date reference materials.
- To provide electronic information sources in the provision of reference service.
- To provide instruction in the use of libraries and research techniques
in order to develop information literacy among the student body for
empowerment as students and for a future of life-long learning.
- To provide general library orientation to classes and individuals.
- To provide specialized instruction in library use and research to classes.
- To provide special classes which offer extended and intensive exposure to library research.
- To provide alternative approaches to library use instruction for individuals and small groups.
- To provide supplemental library materials explaining library use, services and resources.
- To provide competent professionals and support staff in adequate
numbers to meet the needs of faculty and students.
- To provide qualified ALA-accredited MLS librarians to provide technical support, reference and information services.
- To provide library staff with in-service training and other professional development opportunities.
- To regularly evaluate library services in light of student and faculty
needs and the programs and purposes of HCCS.
- To perform a survey of student library service satisfaction and needs on an annual basis.
- To perform a survey of faculty library service satisfaction and needs on an annual basis.
- To incorporate results of surveys and other instruments into the library's long and short range planning process.
- To continue establishing and maintaining a funding formula that brings HCCS in line with the recommendations of the ACRL standards for two-year college libraries.
