EBSCO eBooks: For Desktop

Downloading eBooks

You will need:
  • A portable eReader supported for EBSCO eBooks -- a list of Supported Devices
  • Adobe Digital Editions installed on your computer
  • A valid Adobe ID -- create it for free: Adobe ID

Step 1: Accounts & Software

First, create an Adobe ID by clicking on the icon below:

Adobe icon

(An Adobe ID is a free user account which enables EBSCO to lend you library eBooks and enforce the proper checkout period.  It is also required for iPads and to sync your downloads across devices.)

Next, download Adobe Digital Editions software:

To download eBooks onto your computer and read them offline, or to transfer them to a supported portable eReader device, you must have Adobe Digital Editions 1.7.1 or higher installed on your computer. This free download is available here: http://www.adobe.com/products/digital-editions/download.html.

Step 3: Downloading eBooks

To transfer an eBook from Adobe Digital Editions to a portable device:
  1. Open your downloaded eBook in Adobe Digital Editions.  You will be prompted to enter your Adobe ID and Password the first time you try to open an EBSCO eBook. It might download a URLLink.ascm file into your download folder; if so, double click it to open it with Adobe Digital Editions.
  2. Connect your portable device to your computer with a USB cable.
  3. Turn on your device.
  4. Adobe Digital Editions detects your device and offers to authorize it with your Adobe ID.  (Just like Adobe Digital Editions software must be authorized with your Adobe ID on your computer, your device must also be authorized to transfer protected content to and from your device.)  Click Authorize Device.
  5. Click Finished.
  6. Once authorized, your device will appear as a new bookshelf in your library.
  7. Transfer eBooks to your device bookshelf by clicking and dragging the book title onto the device bookshelf.
  8. The eBook will be added to your Adobe Digital Editions bookshelf or the Bluefire Reader bookshelf
  9. If you have Adobe Digital Editions/Bluefire Reader on other devices AND you sign into those with your Adobe ID, your eBooks will automatically be available on those devices too.
  10. The eBook will automatically expire after the checkout period.

NOTE:

  • If when trying to download an eBook to Digital Editions you receive the following error message: E_AUTH_BAD_DEVICE_KEY_OR_PKCS12

You may need to completely remove any authorization using ctrl-shift-D to Adobe Digital Editions (cmd- shift-D if on Mac). Then restart Digital Editions, and reauthorize with your Adobe ID.

  • When downloading an eBook using the Chrome browser, the download will not automatically open but appears in the download bar at the bottom of the browser as URLLink.acsm. Click the download in the bar and select Open to open the eBook or select Always open files of this type to automatically open future EBSCO eBooks downloads in ADE.

How Do I Return An EBSCO eBook?
  • The eBook will automatically expire after the checkout period, but you can return it when finished by right-clicking on the book in your bookshelf and selecting Return Borrowed Item

Step 2: Find An eBook

Go to the HCC Library Catalog to search for an eBook
  • Search in the Library Catalog and refine your search to HCC only eBook
  • Select a book from the results list and click on EBSCOhost eBook Collection
  • Click Download this eBook (Offline)
Create a My EBSCOhost Account

In order to download EBSCO eBooks to your computer or use the EBSCO eBooks mobile app, you must create a personal My EBSCOhost folder.

To create a personal account:
  1. Click “Create a new Account.” (If you are off campus, you'll be asked to log in with your HCC library barcode number--on the back of your student ID).
  2. Enter the relevant information and remember your Username and Password.
  3. Use your new Username and Password to log in to My EBSCOhost.
  4. Click the Download button in the upper right of the screen.

  7. Click Checkout and Download.
