Library Frequently Asked Questions
In this page...
Q: How do I get a library card?
A: You can get either the HCC e-Card (recommended) or a temporary HCC library card. Check with campus security at any campus to get the e-Card; when you have it come by any library and we will activate your library account. To get a temporary library card, simply stop by any HCC library and request one. Your library account must be activated each semester. To activate your account, just stop by or call any HCC library.
Q: What if I'm a distance student and can't make it to campus?
A: You can get a library card by using the Get My Barcode form.
Q: How do I find books in the HCC libraries?
A: Search the library catalog. Start with what you know. If you know the title, do a title search. If you only know the subject, do a subject search or a keyword search. For more on how to use the catalog, check out the HCC Library tutorial.
Q: How can I access databases to find articles from off-campus?
A: To access databases from home you need to have a library barcode number. This is the number on the back of your student photo ID or the number on your grey library card. This page will help you find that number. When you try to access a database from the list of available databases, you will be asked for your name and library barcode.
Q: I'm having trouble getting into the databases from home. What can I do?
A: You have to have a currently activated library barcode. Some Internet service providers (such as AOL) can require some setup. You have to type carefully. You can find more detailed instructions for solving these problems here.
