Finding Newspaper Articles
As everyone knows, a newspaper is "issued at stated, frequent intervals (usually daily, weekly, or semiweekly), containing news, opinions, advertisements, and other items of current, often local, interest" (Young, 1983, p. 153).
To recognize a newspaper, look for:
- Frequent publication.
- Newsprint (the inexpensive paper newspapers are printed on).
- Unbound sections.
- Lots of advertising.
- News reports written by field reporters.
- Lots of photographs.
- The "inverted pyramid" style of writing.
- Answers to who, what, when, where, why, how.
Newspapers usually include these kinds of articles, etc.:
- News stories
- Editorials
- Columns
- Feature stories
- Advertisements & Classified Ads
- Reviews
