3 Tips for Online Searching

  1. Use the Boolean operators 'and', 'or', and 'not'.

Boolean operators are a way to combine key words in search statements to produce different results.

Boolean operators are named after George Boole, an English mathematician and logician (1815-1864).

You should learn to use three Boolean operators:

    • Use and to narrow your search.
    • Use or to expand or broaden your search.
    • Use not to exclude unwanted matches from your search.

Once you've learned how to use each of the Boolean operators alone, you can learn to combine them in complex search statements.

  2. Use subject and key word searching discriminately! They are different ways of searching and will produce different results.

  3. Use quotation marks ( "animal rights" ) to form a search involving a phrase.
