Instructions for APA style running head - MS Word

Your instructor may require an APA style "running head" at the top of each page of your paper. To create this header using Microsoft Word, follow the directions below:

1.      Insert tab > Header > Blank

2.      Header & Footer Tools: Design tab > Check box for Different First Page

3.      Go back to your header

4.      Insert tab > Page Number > Top of Page > Plain Number 3

5.      Click just to the left of the page number to place your cursor right in front of page number. Type Running head: and then your title in all capital letters.

6.      Hit the Tab key one or two times – however many it takes to get Running head to the left margin.

7.      Go to the second page of your paper. If you need to add a page, do so. (Insert tab > Pages > Blank Page)

8.      Double click near the top of the page to enter the header space.

9.      Insert tab > Page Number > Top of Page > Plain Number 3

10.  Click just to the left of the page number to place your cursor right in front of page number. Type your title in all capital letters. (Only the header on the first page will have “Running head.”)

11.  Hit the Tab key one or two times – however many it takes to get the title to the left margin.

12.  To leave the header space and go back to the body of your paper, double click in the middle of the page.
