Artificial Intelligence in Higher Education: Librarians

(2024, June 11-13) This conference seeks to explore the use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) in libraries. It is also an opportunity for librarians to share their experiences with generative AI technologies and their applications in the library setting.
Scheduled to take place June 11, 12, & 13, 2024, from 1-4pm EDT each day, the GAIL virtual conference aims to promote a deeper understanding of how generative AI can revolutionize library services like instruction, research support, collection management, access services, outreach and collaboration, while also addressing the challenges and ethical considerations this new technology brings to libraries.

This year's conference theme: Prompt or Perish: Navigating Generative AI in Libraries

This is a discussion group to explore the implications of Generative AI programs like ChatGPT on reference, instruction, and other user services.

[30 min read] Libraries are engaging with AI in their educational, service and policy work. This post discusses seven contexts in which that work is taking place. This is #3 in a 4-post series on AI and libraries.

The seven guiding principles from the Association of Research Libraries (ARL) focus on the development and deployment of generative AI, which usually refers to large language models such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT.
The association said the principles aim to “promote ethical and transparent practices, and build trust among stakeholders, within research libraries as well as across the research environment.”

Generative AI may be seen as a disruptive technology that requires professionals to understand these emerging tools while working towards solutions caused by the same technology. Akin to information literacy, AI literacy can help users understand the benefits and limitations of AI, but it will require educators to learn, assess, and use AI tools within the context of their disciplines.
