Kyrgystan: TopicCentral Asian state in the mountainous Tian Shan and Pamir systems, officially Kyrgyz Republic, home of the Kirghiz people. Incorporated into the Russian Empire in 1864, it became part of the Turkestan Soviet republic in 1918 and a full member of the Soviet Union in 1936. It declared independence on 15 December 1990 under its popular president, Askar Akayev.
