The Zombie in Contemporary French Caribbean Fiction

Believed to have emerged in the French Caribbean based on African spirit beliefs, the zombie represents not merely the walking dead, but also a walking embodiment of the region's history and culture. In Haiti today, the zombie serves as an enduring memory of enslavement: it is defined as a reanimated body robbed of part of its soul, forced to work in sugarcane fields. In Martinique and Guadeloupe, the zombie takes the form of a shape-shifting evil spirit, and represents the dangers posed to the maroon or "freedom runner." The Zombie in Contemporary French Caribbean Fiction is the first book-length study of the literary zombie in recent fiction from the region. It examines how this symbol of the enslaved (and of the evil spirits that threaten them) is used to represent and critique new socio-political situations in the Caribbean. It also offers a comprehensive and focused examination of the ways contemporary authors from Haiti and the French Antilles contribute to the global zombie imaginary, identifying four "avatars" of the zombie--the slave, the trauma victim, the horde, and the popular zombie--that appear frequently in fiction and anthropology, exploring how works by celebrated and popular authors reimagine these archetypes.

Zombies have become an increasingly popular object of research in academic studies and, of course, in popular media. Over the past decade, they have been employed to explain mathematical equations, vortex phenomena in astrophysics, the need for improved laws, issues within higher education, and even the structure of human societies. Despite the surge of interest in the zombie as a critical metaphor, no coherent theoretical framework for studying the zombie actually exists. Addressing this current gap in the literature, Theorising the Contemporary Zombie defines zombiism as a means of theorising and examining various issues of society in any given era by immersing those social issues within the destabilising context of apocalyptic crisis; and applying this definition, the volume considers issues including gender, sexuality, family, literature, health, popular culture and extinction.

Reading the Great American Zombie

Challenging the human understanding of life and death, the zombie figure represents a fragmentation of personhood. From its earliest appearances in literature, the zombie characterized a human being that was no longer an indivisible whole, embodying the ontological debate over which elements of personhood are most uniquely human. Through its literary evolution, the zombie's missing element gradually approached a finer definition, as narratives moved beyond highlighting metaphysically opaque concepts like "soul" or "will." Studying over a century of American literary history, this book explores how zombies translate cultural concepts and definitions of personhood. Faith and the Zombie

Demystifying the New Dilemma of Brain Rot in the Digital Era: A Review. Background/Objectives: The widespread phenomenon of "brain rot", named the Oxford Word of the Year 2024, refers to the cognitive decline and mental exhaustion experienced by individuals, particularly adolescents and young adults, due to excessive exposure to low-quality online materials, especially on social media. The present study is exploratory and interpretative in nature, aiming to investigate the phenomenon of "brain rot", with a focus on its key pillars, psychological factors, digital behaviors, and the cognitive impact resulting from the overconsumption of low-quality digital content. Methods: This study employs a rapid review approach, examining research published between 2023 and 2024 across PubMed, Google Scholar, PsycINFO, Scopus, and Web of Science. It explores the causes and effects of brain rot, focusing on the overuse of social media, video games, and other digital platforms. Results: The findings reveal that brain rot leads to emotional desensitization, cognitive overload, and a negative self-concept. It is associated with negative behaviors, such as doomscrolling, zombie scrolling, and social media addiction, all linked to psychological distress, anxiety, and depression. These factors impair executive functioning skills, including memory, planning, and decision-making. The pervasive nature of digital media, driven by dopamine-driven feedback loops, exacerbates these effects. Conclusions: The study concludes by offering strategies to prevent brain rot, such as controlling screen time, curating digital content, and engaging in non-digital activities. Given the increasing prevalence of digital engagement, it is essential to explore a variety of strategies, including mindful technology use, to support cognitive health and emotional well-being. The results can guide various stakeholders—policymakers, practitioners, researchers, educators, and parents or caregivers—in addressing the pervasive impact of brain rot and promoting a balanced approach to technology use that fosters cognitive resilience among adolescents and young adults. Slaves, Cannibals, and Infected Hyper-Whites: The Race and Religion of Zombies. The first decade of the new millennium saw renewed interest in popular culture featuring zombies. This essay shows that a comparative analysis of nightmares can be a productive method for analyzing salient themes in the imaginative products and practices of cultures in close contact. It is argued that zombies, as the first modern monster, are embedded in a set of deeply symbolic structures that are a matter of religious thought. The author draws from her ethnographic work in Haiti to argue that the zonbi is at once part of the mystical arts that developed there since the colonial period, and comprises a form of mythmaking that represents, responds to, and mystifies the fear of slavery, collusion with it, and rebellion against it. In turn, some elements of the Haitian zonbi figure can be found in patterns that haunt recent American zombie films. Zombies in these films are read as figures in a parable about whiteness and death-dealing consumption. This essay suggests that the messianic mood surrounding the presidential candidacy of Barack Obama was consistent with a pattern in zombie films since the 1960s where many zombie-killing heroes are figured as black American males. Zombies are used in both ethnographic and film contexts to think through the conditions of embodiment, the boundaries between life and death, repression and freedom, and the racialized ways in which humans consume other humans. Zombie as Victim in Film, TV Series, and Video Games. The visual culture of the 21st century has reimagined the zombie. The zombie figure has started appearing in every corner of contemporary pop culture, particularly over the last two decades, captivating audiences with outbreak narratives on screens. The main point of my research is to elucidate how and why the zombie figure has transformed from a mindless, slowly-strolling monster in Night of the Living Dead (1968) by George A. Romero to fast, re-introduced apocalyptic zombies in the newest Resident Evil (2023) or to the excluded, outcasted monster in TV Shows such as as iZombie (2015) or In the Flash (2013-2014). My goal is to demonstrate that the figure of a zombie aligns with the concepts of "the Other" and "the Abject," depicting monsters that are victims of human oppression, rather than perpetrators. On the literary level, the zombie apocalypse exposes a range of societal fears and traumas, not only related to death or epidemiological threats, but also fears associated with the economy, including corporate realms, capitalistic structures, economic crises, and political and social systems. They challenge the boundaries of submission and resistance, as well as those of race, sex, nation, and national identity. Xylazine addiction turning humans to zombies: Fact or myth? Xylazine is a strong α-2 adrenergic agonist medication that was initially developed for use in veterinary medicine as an analgesic and sedative for animals. Its primary goal is to calm down animals undergoing medical procedures or testing while minimizing their suffering. Despite being used for veterinary purposes, xylazine has raised concerns because it is increasingly being misused by human populations. Because of its opioid-like sedative and euphoric effects, xylazine has become popular among illicit drug users. Xylazine is a popular recreational drug, especially when mixed with other drugs to intensify its effects. This is because it is inexpensive and readily available in markets. Xylazine addiction has quickly grown into a global concern with serious repercussions that are seen in 2023. Recent reports of xylazine misuse have increased alarmingly, with some reportedly becoming "zombies" as a result of the drug's harmful effects on the human body. The impact of xylazine misuse in 2023 is examined in this abstract, which emphasises the negative effects, including an increase in mortality and broad health effects. This review discusses the harmful effects of Xylazine and the factors that make it one of the riskiest medications. The paper also includes some case studies on the drug xylazine, which explains why it is known as a zombie drug.
