About this Guide


This Resource Guide has been created to help those impacted by Hurricane Harvey, one of the largest storm events to hit the Houston area with unprecedented flooding. You will find information for those who are in need of help, for those who want to help those recovering from the storm, as well as information important to HCC students.


Storm Statistics


  • Approximately 27 trillion gallons of rain fell on Texas and Louisiana in 6 days.
  • Broke records for inches of rainfall during a single storm: 51 inches.
  • $75 billion in estimated losses
  • Estimated over 60 people are dead or feared dead
  • Nearly 37,000 people in evacuee shelters in Texas alone.
  • More than 16,800 people and 1500 pets have been rescued.
  • Approximately 507,000 people have registered for FEMA disaster assistance.

Harvey Fact vs. Fiction


During and after the storm, a lot of rumors and false information spread around. Here are some examples of such incidents during Hurricane Harvey and ways you can combat fake news.

Be careful if you have to pay for any help or for any application fees. Most assistance organizations will not require this.
