Colonial to 1860

Cross-Cultural Colonial Conflicts
English-Native conflicts began as soon as the first European settlers arrived. Includes the Pequot Nation and King Philip's War.
Perspectives on the French and Indian War

Texas Revolution
Between October 1835 and April 1836, residents of Texas rebelled against the government of Mexico and ultimately declared Texas to be an independent republic.
War of 1812
In many ways, this conflict formally established independence from Great Britain for the United States. It is celebrated as the origin of Canada’s nationhood. 1860 - Civil War and Reconstruction

Slave Voyages
The Slave Voyages makes publicly accessible records of the largest slave trades in history. Search these records to learn about the broad origins and forced relocations of more than 12 million African people who were sent across the Atlantic in slave ships, and hundreds of thousands more who were trafficked within the Americas. Explore where they were taken, the numerous rebellions that occurred, the horrific loss of life during the voyages, the identities and nationalities of the perpetrators.
Transatlantic Slave Trade
Between the 16th and 19th centuries, the Transatlantic Slave Trade brought twelve million enslaved Africans across the Atlantic Ocean to the New World as part of a broad exchange of trade goods between England, West Africa, South America, the West Indies, and the United States.
The Underground Railroad and the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850
Free African Americans faced the threat of being returned to a slaveholder as a result of the The Fugitive Slave Act of 1850, which required that all escaped enslaved persons be returned, upon capture, to their masters.

The Colored Conventions
From 1830 until well after the Civil War, African Americans gathered across the United States and Canada to participate in political meetings held at the state and national levels. A cornerstone of Black organizing in the nineteenth century, these “Colored Conventions” brought Black men and women together in a decades-long campaign for civil and human rights.

Oral Histories

Oral Histories are a recording containing information about the past obtained from in-depth interviews concerning personal experiences, recollections, and reflections and are considered primary sources.

John F. Kennedy Presidential Library
"In 1964, the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library began conducting oral history interviews of people whose lives or work intersected with John F. Kennedy, Robert F. Kennedy, and/or the major events and issues of their times. The John F. Kennedy Oral History Collection now holds roughly 1,300 interviews, while the Robert F. Kennedy Oral History Collection houses about 275 interviews. Many of the transcripts have been digitized and are available for viewing online."
