Canvas Integration: Library LTI

Library resources can be added to your online course with just three easy steps.

  1. In Canvas use your course settings to add the Library LTI.
  2. Configure the LTI by copying and pasting just four pieces of information from the box below.
  3. Customize the LTI with library resources relevant for any of your course modules. Databases of eBooks, articles, and media, LibGuides, and How-tos can all be added.

***LTI stands for Learning Tools Interoperability. It is the mechanism that allows you to easily integrate outside tools with your Canvas courses. Other examples include publisher tools, utilities like Dropbox, etc., and are found in Canvas' Settings/Apps area. 

 

Step 1. Add the Manual LTI App to your course

NOTE - the video to the right illustrates the steps below!

  1. Go to your course Settings
  2. Select the Apps tab
  3. Click View App Configurations
  4. Click Add App
  5. Name the App. Yes, you can choose. 
  6. Copy and paste this into the Shared Secret box: RQDURV1j8BULahns6R
  7. Copy and paste this into the Consumer Key box: hccs.libapps.com
  8. Copy and paste this launch URL into the Launch URL box https://hccs.libapps.com/libapps/lti_launch_manual.php
  9. Add hccs.libapps.com in the Domain box
  10. Add your own Description if you wish
  11. Submit the LTI
  12. Follow the steps in the box below to add content to your tool. 

Step 2. Customize the LTI for your module.

NOTE - the video to the right illustrates the steps below!

  1. Select the Modules menu
  2. Select the module from your list
  3. Select the plus sign button to the right of the module name
  4. Select External Tool from the dropdown
  5. The app you just added will appear in the list -- click the name you gave it
  6. Click the Add Item button at the bottom of the window
  7. The App will appear and you will be prompted with a series of dropdowns which will help you select the best material for your assignments.
  8. Remember to Publish the newly added item!
  9. Not happy with just one choice? No problem. You can load multiple instances of the Manual LTI selecting a different guide, page, or box each time.
  10. Want a list of databases for your course?
    1. Under the first dropdown you only have one choice for the library site. Select that one.
    2. When the Content Type dropdown opens select Databases for a Single Subject + Subject Specialists
    3. From the Subject dropdown scroll to click on your subject.
    4. Click Embed Content
  11. ​Want a page of library help tools to display for your students?
    1. Under the first dropdown you only have one choice for the library site. Select that one.
    2. When the Content Type dropdown opens select Full LibGuide
    3. From the dropdown scroll to find Get Help by Jennifer Stidham 
    4. Under Guide Page choose Home
    5. Click Embed Content

Step 3. The very last step -- rename the LTI within the module

Because your LTI's can be re-used, you may wish to customize the name as it appears within your module.

To do this, just

  1. Click the Settings wheel to the far right beside your LTI instance name
  2. Click the Edit pencil 
  3. Type a new title for your LTI
  4. Change anything but the URL.
