When a student begins a chat session, a beep notification will sound on your computer. To answer the student, click "Claim Chat." The blue "Claim Chat" box will disappear and the name of the librarian answering will appear when it has been claimed. If you prefer to preview a chat before claiming it, click the name of the student and the blue "Claim Chat" button. |

After claiming the chat, the student's question and a window with a text box will appear. To send messages to your patron, type in your reply and click the blue "Send Message" button. |

Canned messages are pre-written responses that you can select to use in your chat. This can save time by selecting the answers to some frequently asked questions. You can add your own personal canned messages by select "LibChat" from the top yellow navigation bar and clicking "canned messages." You can also add your own personal canned messages to the list. |

While chatting with a student, there are several icons found in the top right of the chat area. Click the corresponding links to the right to view more information on how to use each icon. |

If a student asks a question that is included in our existing FAQs, you can also link to that answer as a response to the student. Click the FAQs tab and search your keywords in the "Search FAQs" window. The relevant results will appear and you can click on an FAQ to view the full question and response. If you would like to use that FAQ answer, click on the chain link icon to insert a link into your chat box for the student to click.
