Tutoring: Home & Updates **This is the resource center for online tutoring / Upswing. Face-to-Face tutoring does not have its own LibGuide.**

Handouts and links to help you with revising your essays for content and grammar.

Explanation of LibGuides & Tabs

This LibGuide--also known as our resource center--was created in 2017 to assist students using online tutoring / Upswing. However, as it is open-access, anyone can click on handouts and links.

For CHEM and MATH tabs, a few years ago, we were approached by the professors via face-to-face tutoring to house their handouts so that those professors could link this guide in their Canvas pages. Note, though, that although online tutoring / Upswing houses the handouts, we do not edit or create them. These come directly from their departments. Should they decide to migrate their handouts and links to another site, those professors / departments will directly contact students.

The websites we post are to help you, the student.  If you encounter a link that is no longer active (for example, some sites change their addresses), please, contact the Upwsing LibGuide's administrator (and creator of this guide) directly so she can replace it:  ioanna.panos@hccs.edu.  To better serve you, please be as precise as possible about the name of the link and where you found it.

**To outside entities, no soliciting links or services from your business or organization.  The purpose of our resource center is to help our students with their coursework.  We do not help companies or organizations advertise their services.**  See also our section about asking us to promote your for-purchase services:  http:// https://library.hccs.edu/tutoring/promotingoutsideservices

HCC’s library system has LibGuides (http://library.hccs.edu/home) corresponding to some programs of study (or relevant topics), course projects, and topics of interest.  Within a LibGuide are resources and learning tools to help students learn about the respective subjects.  Resources are collected by instructors and librarians, so you know the materials are reliable.

We have created this LibGuide--which we call our resource center--as a learning tool for our handouts and links for content, grammar, and how to avoid plagiarism.  These resources will help you revise your essays!  The site is also mobile friendly, allowing you easily to view and save these documents on your smartphones and tablets.

A LibGuide has main tabs and smaller tabs called "sub-pages" to conveniently organize information.  The main tabs contain sub-pages for content queues and other relevant categories, such as grammar and punctuation.  The content labels correspond to what you see in Upswing (online tutoring).  Part of our redesign is to make it easier for you to find information for grammar, writing, and subject areas.

We hope you find our resource center useful!

Tutoring services--which are free!--are available only to current HCC students (full-time, part-time, and dual credit) for their HCC courses. For example, if are enrolled in ENGL 1301 at HCC but a history course at another institution, tutors will only help you with ENGL 1301.  To make the most out of your session with a tutor, bring or upload:

  • A copy of the instructions for your assignment.
  • Specific questions about your assignment.

Midterm and the end of the semester are the busiest times for tutors.  Try to get help in plenty of time for a tutor to review your work and for you to revise your assignment.
