ChatGPT / AI FAQ

Although HCC has not made a formal ruling as to whether or not using AI and ChatGPT constitutes academic dishonesty, it is up to your professor as to whether such a tool is acceptable. Please be safe and avoid any software that writes your paper for you.

General Caveats:

Do not assume you can use AI, ChatGPT, or similar software to aid or create things for you. Check with your professor.
HCC does not yet have a campus-wide policy regarding AI. Some departments have their own policies, which include allowing individual professors to incorporate AI into their courses. **This does not mean every course in that department allows AI.**
Should you use AI in a course that forbids it--even though a different course in the same department has allowed the software--you could suffer consequences as laid out in HCC's Student Code of Conduct manual. Ignorance of the rules does not absolve you of responsibility.

NPR: Tech giants pledge action against deceptive AI in elections [Feb. 16, 2024]
"Tech giants including Microsoft, Meta, Google, Amazon, X, OpenAI and TikTok unveiled an agreement on Friday aimed at mitigating the risk that artificial intelligence will disrupt elections in 2024.
The tech industry "accord" takes aim at AI-generated images, video and audio that could deceive voters about candidates, election officials and the voting process. But it stops short of calling for an outright ban on such content."

Busted for AI

NPR: A sci-fi magazine has cut off submissions after a flood of AI-generated stories [Feb. 24, 2023]
"The science fiction and fantasy magazine Clarkesworld has been forced to stop accepting any new submissions from writers after it was bombarded with what it says were AI-generated stories.
The magazine officially shut off submissions on February 20 after a surge in stories that publisher and editor-in-chief Neil Clarke says were clearly machine-written."

Europol: The criminal use of ChatGPT – a cautionary tale about large language models [March 27, 2023]

Reuters: EU clinches deal on landmark AI Act - reaction [Dec. 9, 2023]
" European Union policymakers on Friday agreed a provisional deal on landmark rules governing the use of artificial intelligence (AI).
They include the use by governments of AI in biometric surveillance and how to regulate AI systems such as ChatGPT.
