Outreach for Librarians: Blind Date with a Book

21st Century Outreach for Innovative Librarians

three books wrapped in brown paper with a short descriptionThings to Think About:

  • It takes a lot of time to wrap books and put a description on it.  If you have a student group, this is a great activity for them.  Order pizza!
  • We wrote a category for the book (i.e. history, psychology, technology) and then wrote a descriptor.
  • While this activity can be done anytime, the theme is also a good one for around Valentine’s Day.

Objective:  Students will be able to check out a book on a subject that they might not have chosen otherwise.

Why:  This motivates students to read in different areas and gets quality books to circulate.

Supplies:  library books, brown wrapping/shipping paper, scissors, tape, markers

How To:

  • Pull books to wrap.  Look for books that tell a story as well as being informational.
  • Look for books in areas of high interest but probably haven’t circulated.
  • Before you wrap the books, look at the content to see what short description you could write on the cover to get someone to check it out.
  • Wrap the entire book – not just a “book cover” - because you don’t want students flipping through the book, and then write a description on it.
  • Students can only unwrap the book once they’ve taken it to the Circulation Desk to check it out.
