Outreach for Librarians: Using a Calendar

21st Century Outreach for Innovative Librarians

Using a Calendar

Objective:  Students will be able to systematically use a calendar to organize life, work, and school.

Why:  Students need to be able to organize and balance multiple areas of their life.

Supplies:  Blank calendars (you can find these on the Internet – downloadable for free), colored pens and/or highlighters

How To:

You can do this in a variety of ways depending on if you’re doing this as a pop-up table or a hands-on workshop.

Pop-Up Table

  • Download 3-5 current faculty syllabi with assignments and tests with their due dates.
  • Put assignments and tests on demo calendar.  Use different colors for each class.
  • Talk to students about what you did on the calendar and why.
  • Give them a blank calendar if they don’t have one.

Workshop

  • Have students use their syllabi and fill in a calendar for the semester
  • Show them how to use different colors to color code classes

Things to Think About:

  • Students can also put their assignments in an electronic calendar.  This is a good place to show them how to use their Outlook calendar on Office 365.
  • Do this at the very beginning of the semester and run off calendar pages for the next four months of the semester.  Often students don’t have any sort of calendar, and this will at least get them started.
