Outreach for Librarians: Magnetic Poetry

21st Century Outreach for Innovative Librarians

magnetic poetryMagnetic Poetry

Objective:  Students will be able to write poetry using the magnetic words

Why:  Not only is this a creative exercise, but it forces your brain to use only the words available which involves problem solving and higher level thinking skills.

Supplies:  sets of magnetic words, a magnetic white board or other metal surface

How To:

Acquire sets of magnetic words and place them on your magnetic whiteboard or metal surface

Things to Think About:

  • You want at least two sets so that there are enough words.
  • You can purchase magnetic sheets that go through the printer to create specialized words for your school and/or library
  • Words will need to be reused, so poetry will come and go.
  • Monitor the board frequently and take pictures of the poems to use in marketing.
  • You could encourage your students to take pictures of their poetry and post it to social media using the library’s hashtag.
  • April is Poetry Month.
