Outreach for Librarians: Chess in the Library

21st Century Outreach for Innovative Librarians

Things to Think About

While chess can be a part of Gaming in the Library, it can also be its own program.

If your campus has a chess club, engage them to work with you, promote, and then play in your program.

Sometimes pieces get lost.  Use your 3D printer to print lost pieces, or you can use the set with the missing piece as replacement pieces for other sets.

You may want to purchase chess books that teach you how to play.

Chess in the LibraryWhy:  Chess is a very strategy-intensive game that teaches critical thinking.

Supplies:  Multiple chess boards, timers (optional – only if you have advanced, dedicated players)

How To:

You can do this in a variety of ways

  • Put a chess board out in the library for “pick-up” games.  Caution: Our chess boards kept “wandering away” and were found as far away as the entrance to the building.  Consequently, we leave the boards out, but students have to check out the pieces.
  • Chess in the Library event – Schedule a specialized “Gaming in the Library” Chess Edition.  Put the chess boards out and let students play.
  • Chess Tournament – If you have a large group of dedicated players, you could play tournament style.
