Outreach for Librarians: Sew on a Button

21st Century Outreach for Innovative Librarians

Sew on a Button

Objective:  Students will be able to sew on a button.

Why:  Essential Life Skill

Supplies:  cloth, buttons, thread, needles, scissors, needle threader (optional)

How To:

Show them how to:

  • Thread a needle.
  • Make a knot
  • Starting from the bottom, bring the needle up through the cloth and the button hole and then back down.  Repeat.
  • Knot thread and cut off excess.

Things to Think About:

  • Pre-cut pieces of cloth, and you can use scrap cloth from previous projects.
  • A bag of buttons, needles and thread can be purchased from various craft stores.
  • Teach students to hold the needle so that the thread doesn’t come out when they pull through.
  • If you have a button with four holes, sew on two holes, knot the thread, and then begin again with the other two holes for added stability.
  • Remind them to leave enough thread so that they can knot it off.

Alternatives:

  • Threading a needle can be a challenge for all beginners, so to make it easier, you may want to use embroidering needles and floss.
